Sayuri Yamamoto

String Bass Instructor

Sayuri Yamamoto, a member of the Hawaii Symphony, has been a double bass faculty at the San Diego Summer Music Institute since 2014 and also performs with the San Diego Winds. Born and raised in Japan, she moved to California initially to study English and later received degrees in double bass performance from California State University, Fullerton and the USC Thornton School of Music. While living in San Diego, she frequently performed with the San Diego Symphony, the California Chamber Orchestra, Santa Barbara Symphony, Long Beach Symphony, Riverside Symphony, among other ensembles. During her time at USC, Sayuri also studied viola da gamba and frequently performed on baroque bass, viola da gamba, and violone with the San Diego Bach Collegium and the Kensington Baroque Orchestra. As an educator, Sayuri was the teaching assistant to Dennis Trembly, former principal bass of the LA Philharmonic, at USC, and served as double bass faculty at Biola University. Currently residing on Oahu Island, she teaches beginning bass class (fourth grade and up) in private school, coaches at high schools and youth orchestras, and maintains a private studio. She is also a faculty member at San Diego Bass Fest since it started in 2016.
